In December, I referred Shamshiya to receive a formal loan through Rang De, to finance the construction of another floor on top of her home. This process has been deeply insightful. To begin with, I learned that she has never taken a loan before because of fear of being harassed by local moneylenders. We went to the bank together to open a savings account for her, and it was clear to see how intimidated someone who is not familiar with the processes might feel.
Referring Shamshiya to Rang De’s platform gave me a reason to visit her humble home, an experience I will not forget. Also, very importantly, I had the opportunity to experience first hand the challenges we need to overcome to close the financial inclusion gap in India.
